Terroir: Barossa Valley
The 2017 Merlot shows a vibrancy and juiciness. It is cool fermented, under 22C, and so has retained its fruit forward flavours. Ripeness in the vineyard has also ensured a soft supple palate. Medium bodied, classic, and supple style with a deep red color. Aroma of plum, spice, and earth notes with palate of plum, spice, and black fruits and cedar.
The trio of red varieties used here are Corvina, Cabernet and Merlot. With the excellent skill and light touch of the winemakers at Fasoli Gino, they have produced a very friendly, soft and approachable wine, full of summer berry flavour. Resembling Valpolicella or a good Bardolino, it boasts an elegant bouquet of dark cherry, blackcurrant and damson plum. Supple, easy tannins balance the gentle fruit profile perfectly. A great party red or perhaps to accompany lighter lunchtime choices. Can also be served slightly chilled in order to promote its elegant fruit flavours.

Terroir: Coonawarra Estate
94% Cabernet Sauvignon / 5% Merlot / 1% Petit Verdot
First Growth is only produced when the growing season produces exceptional fruit quality, and when a particular vintage is deemed to have ageing potential beyond 15 years.
Traditionally, First Growth is predominantly made using Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from our Abbey vineyard, with some vintages containing a small portion of Merlot and/or Petit Verdot. It is a wine that proudly reflects the sub-region it is grown in, and is humbled by critical reviews including Langton's 'Excellent' Classification V, a 5-star winery rating from James Halliday and unfailing benchmark scores from international wine critics.
Since the release of the inaugural 1988 vintage, First Growth has set a benchmark for superior wine quality in the Coonawarra region. It is a wine made without compromise, using only the very best viticulture and winemaking practices, and is only produced when a particular vintage shows exceptional fruit quality and is deemed to have ageing potential for a minimum of fifteen years. As a result it has garnered a reputation for outstanding cellaring ability and is one of the few wines to have featured in every Langton’s classification.
An optimal 2014 growing season in Coonawarra produced highly coloured, concentrated and varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. Veraison occured in February with most of the fruit coming off in early April.
First Growth is made exclusively from Reynell selection Cabernet Sauvignon (cuttings from pre-phylloxera Bordeaux) grown in the very best sub-sections of Parker Coonawarra Estate’s Abbey vineyard. We have also included a small portion of Petit Verdot from the "95 Block' in this vintage.
Fermentation and extended skin maceration took a total of thirty-six days, before pressing to a selection of 100% new Barriques, sourced from renowned Bordeaux cooperages Sequin Moreau and Taransaud. Regular racking and further élevage in oak for twenty months has made a complex and tightly structured wine, with great potential to reward cellaring for more than twenty years.
This wine has rested in bottle under strict temperature controlled conditions before release.
Origin: New Zealand
New Zealand’s alluvial plains, dry river beds and cool maritime climate produce these wines of character. Over the millienia rocks and stones have been transported from the mountains by glaciers and rivers before being deposited to form the valley floors. These pebbles capture the warm sun during the day and radiate heat at night to ripen the grapes producing a well balanced wine with berry fruit flavors.
The Sally’s Paddock is the jewel in the Redbank crown. Named after winemaker Neill Robb’s wife, Sally’s Paddock is a distinctive wine made from a single non-irrigated vineyard established in 1973 at Redbank. The Sally’s Paddock vineyard grows modest crops of exceptional quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Merlot which are hand-picked at optimum balance, small batch made with wild yeast, hand punched, basket pressed all in the old Australian way. Extended use of new American and Nevers oak ensures that the characteristics of the unique blend from this legendary vineyard are conserved in the wine until ultimate maturity. It is universally regarded as one of Australia’s classic red wines.
This powerful wine has a clear Ruby Violet colour with a tinge of purple. Distinctive legs as usual. The fresh berry aromas have a definite cigar box background with some Rose and Violet floral notes. Some lifted spice and cherry aromas are evident as well. Definite, balanced and fine palate, fresh and tasting of berries but overall wine flavoured. Subtle and complex new wood flavours are well integrated. Some dark cherry flavours on the front palate. The middle palate is “wine” all the way with lingering complex savoury flavours but more fresh fruit characters than the previous vintages. Fine grained natural tannins. Very long soft clean finish with hints of spices and a lovely aftertaste. This wine is deceptively soft, as usual with Sally’s Paddocks at this stage, and will mature beautifully for at least 20 years.
